At first I was upset because the story reads very much like a Harry Potter rip off. The Chosen one, orphan, picked up at eleven by a great mage (aka wizard), the headmaster of the one mage school in England, concealed through magic from the eyes of normals (muggles?).
Our chosen one has an archenemy, the hideous humdrum, who is trying to destroy the world of magic and, of course, there is also a classmate antagonist who seems pretty dark. Did I mention that the chosen one has a girl best friend who is a bit of a know-it-all? Yep.
Sounds familiar? Right. (No wonder she wrote also Fangirl!) I almost threw the book out of the window. Not to mention that the voice was a little choppy and hard to follow at times.
But, hey, this is Rainbow Rowell we are talking about. I kept reading and…OH BOY!
