As a writer you put your sweat and blood in your book, so it can be very hurtful to read bad reviews of your book(s).
What is the best course of action?
1-Never reply or comment to any review (positive or negative). Anyone is entitled to their opinion.
2-There will always be someone who loves the book and someone who hates the book. Count on it. Don’t fret on any one specific review
3-Once reviews start to accumulate (15 or more) look at the average. If your average is below 3, consider revising your book. Read the reviews carefully and try to pinpoint what readers found disappointing. If your average is above 4, kudos! You are doing terrific! Read the reviews and see if there is any good advice you could use to improve your work.
I received so far 25 ratings on Goodreads (average 4. 36) and 18 ratings on Amazon (average 5!), YAY! But still there were some good points made. For example someone (with a 4 star review) said the voice was a little “choppy”. This hurt :( I thought about it and I think they might be right. Compared to some of my following books some transitions could have been smoother. Click here to see the reviews and get an idea of how this works.
4-Stay true to yourself! You cannot please everyone. For example, one of the criticism I received (form a 4 star review) was that they were disappointed one of the characters did not get a happy ending. Well, I’m not gonna dole happy endings out to everyone, that’s just who I am.
